I am hoping for some help here.

92 240sx convertible with RB20det...

I had overheating problems with the RB right away after install. I put in a radiator, thermostat, etc... now heating seems to be taken care of.

When I first got it (1 month ago), it would start real hard when cold... took a lot of cranks to get going. But, once started, while the engine was still cool, it ran fantastic... very smooth, fast, etc..

After it warmed up, it developed a miss. Then eventually started to overheat... I figured if I took care of the heating problem it would be a good start.

I also assumed that I had a couple bad coil packs. So I found some Infinity Q45 coils that are supposed to work. Of the six original coils.. four of them show some signed of heat marks on the side of the coil. I replaced the two that seemed the worst.

It didn't help. The car is still very hard to start when cold, and has a very pronounced miss (I am sure more than one cylander is not firing).

I just picked up a full set of six coils off EBAY. I took off all the original coils. I decided to pull the spark plugs as long as I was so close to them. (NGK) by the way.

Plug 1 front the front of the car is black on the inside end.. and dry with no smell of gas. Plug 2 is the same black on the internal end, but slightly damp with gas (just a little bit of gas.. you can wipe a bit off of it, and you can definitly smell the gas. ) Plug 3 is the same as plug 2Plug 4 is the same color, but quite wet with gas. You can wipe it onto your finger. Plug 5 is same as plug 4Plug 6 is black but dry same as plug 1.

I replaced the coils for plugs 2 and 3. Coil 1 looks fine. Coils 4 and 5 look bad with some discolored spots on the outside. Coil six looks OK as well.

So.. what's the deal with spark plugs? If they are all black on the end, does that mean they are bad?If they have a hint of gas is that bad? Could it just be the timing of when I shut the enigine down?If they are quite wet does that mean for sure that the cylander wasn't firing at all?

How many cylanders can an RB run on? If two weren't firing, would the engine still run? If four weren't firing would the engine still run?

I would guess that two were not firing.

I know that's a lot of question.. but I really could use some help. Thanks!!!

Spark has nothing to do with your overheating problem. If your using the KA radiator then thats why you might be having problems. Try pulling your coil packs and with an extra spark plug check to see if you have spark on every individual coil pack. Also Z31 coil packs will work after rewiring your harness with the Z31 coil pack plug.

Also.. I replaced the ignitor chip and that didn't change a thing.

Could the timing be that cause of all this??

The overheating is no longer a problem. The car's temp seems to be just fine now.

My problem is that it has a bad miss.

I know for sure that it can run with 5 cylinders. The RB I worked on was firing on all cylinders boosted and drove perfectly fine and still sounded like it had a miss. Maybe its just an RB thing.

The best way to check your timing with a standard timing light would be to take a spark plug wire/ignition wire and modify it to go between your coil pack and spark plug. Using the factory loop wire on the ignitor chip will yield false timing(with standard gun). By the way the timing on the RB20(t) is 15 btdc(manual) and 20 btdc (auto).
