Car: spending too much money on my cars.

Post

After setting the tsp between .45 -.55 closed throttle and over 4 volts at WOT. My car idled at around 1800rpms. I tried to lower the idle by using the idle screw. This lowered the idle to around 1200rpms. When I put the car in gear the idle dropped to almost 600 and with the air on it dropped to around 500 and was almost stalling. No matter how I adjusted the tps unit the car wouldnt idle correctly without attempting to stall with accessories on or car in gear. The only way the car idles and works correctly is if I adjust the tsp all the out with no tension on the spring. So my volt reading are way off. Any ideas on how to fix this? I had to replace the stock tps. I ordered one from Japan. How would this affect my cars performance?

How does the car run if tps is unplugged? Try unplugging it, then setting the idle screw between 2nd and 3rd runners of the intake manifold to what ever rpms you think you want, 900rpms is avg. then run the car around the block before plugging in the tps again. go around the bliock again and idle should even out

I'll try that today. But will unplugging the tps allow for more idle controll? Meaning I had the screw turned all the way in before and i could only get the idle down to 1200rpms or so. Do I need to unplug the IACU unit before I adjust the idle. Or what ever it's called by the idle screw.

No, unplugging the tps allows you to adjust the idle without the computer trying to take over. But you dont need to unplug the unplug the other, at least i didnt have to. The idle will bounce around after plugging the tps back in. This will eventually stop after a couple minutes!

Not sure if this is any different on an auto but here is what I have found for setting the idle properly

1.) Warm Car up to Highway Driving Temp2.) Turn off Car3.) Lower Throttlebody IDLE screw to minimum (Do not Bottom Out)4.) Disconnect TPS5.) Start Car6.) Observe IDLE RPMS7.) Turn off Car8.) Raise/Lower IACV depending on level9.) Repeat steps 4-7 until IACV set to 850 +/- 50rpm10.) Plug in TPS11.) Start Car12.) Adjust TPS to .455v using a voltmeter on the middle pin

I had found this on FA, unfortunately I don't know what the guys name was to give him credit.

I tryed to adjust the tps as stated above with the same problem high idle and unable to lower idle to the correct level. It's strange I can drop it to around 1100-1200rpms but when in put the car in gear it drops to 600rpms and idle rough ready to stall and with a/c on it drops to 500rpms. My volt meter is flashing low voltage below 12.2. So I had to readjust it back the way I had it. Which is idling at 900-950rpms. With the car in gear and a/c on the car will idle around 700-900rpms.

what are the effects on my tps not being calibrated correctly?

spins- how do you adjust the tps- spring? thanks - i have a j30 and replaced the tps but- i found out it has to be adjusted- the tps mounting bolt holes have room for adjustment also- it seems- is it adjustable that way as well???

Do you also have an auto transmission? Are you using the auto ECU? One quick check to drop the idle is unplug the IACV plug next to the IACV. It has 4 wires, the one that should be giving the signal for high idle should be the light blue one of the four. So if you disconnect it the idle shouldnt stay up in the 1200-1800 range and should drop to a lower idle then you need to turn up the idle adjustment screw. If this doesnt do anything then nevermind.

I run an auto ECU, auto harness, manual TPS, and manual transmission. I have the high idle problem where the car idles around 1600. I cured it by adding an on off switch to that light blue IACV wire. So when I want high idle (for rolling in slow traffic etc) I keep the switch on and the IACV stays more open giving the car a stronger idle (like an automatic car has). When the switch is off the car drops to regular idle around 800 RPM's. If the car is not moving but the switch is on, the idle will drop to 800 after the car has come to a complete stop.
