You don't teach the ecu to manage boost. You tell the ecu to run more fuel at certain air pressure pre-turbo. the amount of boost pressure can be related to the amount of air that passes through the mass airflow sensor. That is the way an safc works, it develops a fuel map based on how much air is passing through the maf. So basically in the ecu tune you are changing how much fuel the engine receives based on how much air passes through the mass airflow sensor. Now it's not the best way to do it because after hard acceleration if you drop the pedal your car will run rich for an instant, but it is a way to get safe boost from your car. Basically you strap the car to the dyno and rev the engine through it's gearing while looking at a afr gauge and adjust fuel pressure to keep the car within a safe range.
That being said it will take some dyno time to get this right or he needs to find someone who has used the exact same setup and use their fuel map. The reason it's so easy to do a Ka-T without changing the ECU is because tuning maps are common and available for virtually any setup, I don't know how readily this information is available for the RX8. Best bet would be to sign up and SEARCH on an RX-8 forum.
