I'm somewhat new to this board (only my 2nd thread) and I just got this 1995 240SX SE. I noticed that one of the previous owners installed this resistor, inline with the coolant temperature sensor. This sensor has only one wire on it.

From what I have read, it's the sensor for the coolant temperature gauge. Why would anyone do that but fooling the gauge ? I'm also wondering if there are other parts within this "mod kit" that I need to remove. I did a search and I didn't see anything that's related to the inline resistor.

Insights ? Ideas ? Please help.

it wouldnt only fool the gauge, but the ECU as well. It may be some cheap way to alter the timing/fuel maps... like trick the ecu into thinking the engine is always running cold. I have no idea why anyone would do that, the gains would be minimal at best. Try just removing that resistor, it *should* be the only part of that mod. keep in mind this is all speculation on my part.

on a side note, I had a 95 prelude that had a ton of crap like that done to it... half wired switches.... random wires running everywhere. took me a week to sort out and fix. I hate it when people do random trash mods to their cars then sell them for someone else to fix.

I believe (from what I have read) that there are two coolant temp sensor, one is for the gauge and the other is for the ECU. The one for the gauge has a single wire and that's the one with an inline resistor. The ECU coolant temp sensor has two wires.

I'm still wondering if there is any other parts that need to be removed in conjunction with it.

so a guy who is stupid enough to try a ghetto upfuel trick like that put the resistor in the wrong place, that suprizes you. I see a pattern

His dumbassness (if that's a word) amazes me. Oh well, there are always this kind of people in every branch of car community I have been a member of. Doesn't matter whether it's Isuzu, Corvette, DSM or 240SX. The difference is the concentration. And, no, the price of the vehicle is not a strong indication of the percentage of the dumbasses.

I had one Skyline like that, it would run crappy intermittently and then it just died one day. I checked it out and discovered the previous owner had installed the SAFC with; scotchlocks, wire nuts and wire just twisted together and exposed. I ended up canniballising wire from another harness and soldering in 6" sections of wire in some places. I must have been cutting out mangled wires and soldering for four hours, the whole time cursing the Dr. Mengele responsible for the mess. After that the car ran awesome.

Wow, and that's a Skyline too to boot. Intuitively, better financial standing would mean a better class. I guess that will not always be true.

I paid about $400.00 for the R32 sitting outside, think of it like an 84' 305 Camaro right now and that's about the condition it's in. Sat in a grassy lot for a year and looks it.
