All,

Young son has every thing removed and we are down to the cover. What is the best way to approach removing it. I am asking before attempting because I do not want to harm it in any way. Any help would be appreceated.

Jonsey

Read the timing chain guides posts in IOM.

I'm not a newby, I have put questions here before and even helped with indepth technical answers to help others understand the issues better. I spent the better part of the morining reading, printing and researching all the posts, guides and threads related to this issue for an answer to the question I posted. Other than a mention that you "pry under the waterpump and near the alternator", I could not find any useful information. Is the cover located by dowels, what kind of sealer is used from the factory, can it be moved side to side or does it come straight off. My cover has all the retaining bolts removed but will not move with the pressure I felt comfortable with.

The question was asked with the understanding that the many informative users that read this site could enlighten me with what thay had done to solve this problem. Not with a quick one liner to just in reality say "pass".

It would be welcome and I would be greatful for any of the other proud Q45 owners to offer any help or suggestions to help me with replacing the quides. I have read all the posts and read all the quides that owners have submitted and was impressed with the quality of the information offered. It is those people/owners I am reaching out to for help. I have seen too many new owners get flamed for asking that first question, I don't know of any member on this site that started with, maybe "the second or third question" and "knew it all" after that. .Sorry for the rant, but I have been impressed with the caliber of members on this site and the effort they went through to help one another find a solution to their problems.

In the FSM, you will find RTV is required.

Might try a little reading there.

I haven't done it, but since most of the mechanical repair posts are in IOM, maybe post there?

Yes, there are dowels, but they are only for alignment.

There are actually pry points on the front covers if you search around them carefully you'll find "extra" material from the casting process that is there for nothing more than cover removal.

I'm actually headed out at this moment to do a tune up on a friends car, but as soon as I get back I can provide detailed pictures of the areas that I'm referring to if necessary.

That would be awsome. I didn't want to risk gouging the machined sealing surfaces. And with this type of work a picture is indeed worth a 1,000 words.

Many thanks......

Here you go.

Notice the gaps between the front cover and the rest of the block?

anlasak,

You really stood up to the plate and hit one out of the park. This is more than I had hoped for. Hopefully this will be available for other members and would be a valuable addition to some of the guides.

You answered my question

Again I have been impressed with the quality and readiness of others to help people on this site.

Thanks againJonesy........

I think the most important step in timing cover removal is to get a can of brake parts cleaner and make sure its really clean, its easy to miss bolts and break it!

Excellent pics!!

When I pulled my covers, I had a piece of Styrofoam board insulation, 12" x 24" maybe 1/2" thick. As I removed a bolt, I just plugged the bolt into the Styrofoam so I knew exactly where each bolt went back into the engine.

Draw a rough outline of your engine on the board and use that to keep your bolts in order.

Not my idea, but a tip I remember from a post a couple of years ago.

The reason is that the bolts are different legenths, and need to go back into the same holes.
