Guys, I need some help!

Were doing a 5 spd swap and having all kinds of trouble with the pilot bushing.

Are you supposed to pound it in flush with the outside of the pressure plate or pound it all the way in.

It seems to be tight for a while.. then gets past the lip of the plate and then the opening is bigger... it goes in and is loose.. it's spins and moves in and out.

We are using another 5 spd engine set as an example.. that engine has the bushing all the way in there.. but it is tight as can be. So we expected that to be the case...

I'm afraid that if it spins and moves it's going to cause all kinds of noise and cause problems.

The bushings are only $6 at the nissan dealership... so we though maybe we'd try two of them back to back.. Didn't work.. they both go in further than the plate and both move around a bit.

Any ideas??? How are these bushings supposed to seat in there??

Anybody have a definite part number on them? Maybe I'm getting the wrong part?

There are no bearings for this engine right... It's a bushing?

it's strange.. the hole seems to have a different diameter at different points.. the outside of the hole is the tightest.. (say a value of 3 wide), then their is a middle level that is the biggest, (say a value of 5), then all the way inside in the crank is like a value of 4... So it goes tightest, loose, tight...

Help please!!!

That bushiing should seat all the way in and it should not be loose or moving around. If it is that loose sounds like maybe the crank seat area is wallowed out some. You mentioned the pressure plate, by chance your not trying to seat it with the pressure plate in place are you?

Trying to hammer it all the way into the back of the hole... But when it get's back there, it's loose. It moves around a lot.

So that why I was wondering if it's supposed to be seated to the front of the hole or the back of the hole?

I'm confused!

Yeah that's a real noodle scratcher. Usually folks have problems pulling the pilot bushing. Can you check to see if the inside of the crank was ground out before.

What engine is this for?

It's a 93 KA24de engine... originally mated to a auto trans.. obviously trying now to get the 5 spd hooked up properly.

by the way... the pilot bushing is easy as hell to get out... it's copper or some sort of soft metal... take a flathead screwdriver and pound it into the bushing. You'll cut through it like a hot knife through butter... then cut again at another point...

anyhow.... So the bushing is supposed to go all the way in right? And once it goes all the way in it's supposed to be really tight right? No spinning, no in and out movement at all?

Anybody have a part number that they are sure works? Maybe my parts dept. is giving the wrong part?

it should be snug as a bug in a rug ie you should need a small socket and mallet to tap the pilot bushing in all the way.

I need the socket and hammer to get it into the opening at the pressure plate... but just after it gets past flush it slips past the lip and then is loose again.

stupid car.

Can I use a pilot bearing from an altima maybe???

Any other ideas?

What would happen if I just hammer it in to flush and not keep pushing it backwards... would it stay there permanently? Or would that not mount on the output shaft properly?

Thanks for the help guys!

The pilot bushing is made of brass. I usually pound them in flush with the end of the crankshaft and they shouldn't move. If it moves, it can wear out prematurely. The only thing I can think of is that the bushing hole might have been warped or machined improperly. You can check with a machine shop or a transmission shop if they have any that might be slightly oversized that will fit a little more snug. Good luck

that's flywheel for sure, from the pic. Yeah dunno man, that's a weird one. Have you tried checking with another dealer if the part number you got is the right one?

sorry... yeah.. I'm retarded.. flywheel.. as pictured.

I think we're going to try a pilot bearing from an Altima with a KA to see how that works.
