Im not sure if this is in the right forum .. but here goes

I got my versa and have decided to do my oil changes.. i know its not terribly difficult but im a first timer with oil changes on cars .. never really done them ...

so here is the question .. i have the 1.6 engine and the manual calls for 3.5 quarts with filter change .. now when you drain the oil and let it all come out .. are you guys dumping the called for amount in and then checking it ? .. ie; filling with 3.5 quarts right off the bat and checking it ?

or are you dumping in say 3-3.25 quarts and checking it based on the fact that not ever drop of oil is coming out ? .. i dont wanna overfill it ..

thanks alot

tom

Every car has a dip stick to check the level when ever you want too. Usually people check it when the engine is warm for more accurate results. But just empty out what ever comes out, measure if you want and put in exactly what ever it calls for...Easy enough.

After draining the oil and changing out the filter....Put in approximately 3 quarts of oil. Start your engine for about 30 seconds so the new oil filter can fill up with oil. Shut off your engine and wait about 3-4 minutes and check the oil level using the dipstick. Add just enough oil to bring the oil level to the full mark on the dipstick. You are done. It's really easy.

filling the oil filter up before attatching it will help, too, instead of screwing on an empty one. Depending on if the filter is positioned well for this, I guess... The oil pressure comes up quicker than if the oil pump has to fill up the new filter first. And a small amount over full isn't as bad as too much, an X-GF put 5+ quarts into her car that took less than 4 and drove it for weeks before I checked it, and it ran fine for years after that...

I'm thinking the 1.6 is very similar in design. On the 1.8, the filter sits sideways but if you change your oil fast enough, it won't be dry when you start it back up. And yea, a little bit over the full line won't hurt it. There's some room for error but usually things can happen if you overfill by half a quart or more.

Yeah the filter is setup sideways .. I drained all the oil .. let it sit to fully drain ... swapped out the filter and put in 3.5 Quarts and its all good
