Alright, have a BIG problem...

I was out tonight messing around, pushing it pretty hard but not over redline. Was doing fine until I stopped at a light and I noticed that my car had died. Started up just fine, so I turned into a parking lot to check to make sure there wasn't any smoke or anything coming out.

Everything looked fine until I pulled the throttle up a bit and I heard some really loud ticking coming from my crankcase. Checked the oil real quick and I noticed that it was low, so I tried starting it up and driving over to the gas station.

Didn't even get it out of the lot because the ticking was so loud that I was scared to drive it any further. Dumped a quart of oil into it, then started it back up and pulled the throttle a little, ticking was still there. Once I got into the car, I noticed that my idle was jumping around, almost dying. Decided to chance it and drive it home and the sound just got worse, the car dying when I let my foot off of the acellerator. Starts up just fine, just stalls out when I take my foot off, and it's ticking REAAALLLY loud. (Girlfriend says it sounds like a woodpecker ). Then when I was about to turn onto my street I could hardly keep it running, stalls out if I'm not flooring it, and when I am, I'm CRAWLING.

Any ideas as to what may be up? Fixable or should I just pull the engine and swap it out?

EDIT: It's a 92 engine, btw.

Sounds like your oil pump gave out!

This almost always means new engine time, sorry.

ouch my friend. Always sad to see another KA go - but for future reference, and those of us who don't want to come across the same story. Is there anyway to check on the condition of your oil pump? This sounds exactly like something that would happen to me one day, being it I just have bad luck.

really the problem with the oil pump going is that you now have probably let it go too far if it is making the loud chugging noises.

The next step after the chugging noises would be the engine's metal parts snapping and wearing down because they have no lubrication. A friend of mine snapped his camshaft in two because of this.
