I had a similar problem when I first stared my rebuilt engine. It had an erratic idle and generally seemed like it had a vacuum leak. The only problem that I found was with injector number one, there was a loud hissing noise coming from it. Everytime i pushed down on the injector the noise would disappear and the engine would idle purfect. I thought it was the injector o-ring and started to pull it out. Trouble was, I couldn't get it out. I thought I would have to remove the fuel rail, so I loosened the bolt by #1 injector and found that it was already loose. hmmm. The bolt by the firewall was a lot tighter. So all I had to do was torque the fuel rail down and it solved all my idle problems. So easy, so fast, so instantly gratifing.
