I searched here and on the net and went to the manual but would appreciate exactly when to select ECO drive. I use ECO a lot since I piked up my 2013 M37 the end of December and gas mileage is terrible. My '06 was so much better. Should ECO be used once on the highway and normal setting for in-town driving? Sounds like a stupid q but honestly I'd appreciate a specific driving example , e.g. on highway when up to 55 or not in stop and go.
Thanks

Many of the owners I know say they are getting worse mileage driving in the city using ECO mode. The force feedback pedal and early shift logic are actually going to force you to apply more throttle than you would normally have to. It works really well for cruising at highway speed where having a drop in fuel injector pulse with an higher threshold required to over come torque converter lockup.

In my G (same drivetrain) I have found better results driving in Sport mode for the majority of my city driving over standard more which in my car is halfway between your Standard and ECO mode.

I do not know what you are expecting for fuel economy but it is a good day when they are in the upper teens, low twenties with a good amount of highway driving.

Thank you very much.

I was comparing my '13 to my '06 M and I too have lower gas MPG using the ECO in city driving. I don't have the pedal response. It is curious that the Sport mode is better than Normal. What I'll do is just experiment between Normal and Sport and leave the ECO for the highway. I was doing 60 MPH (cruising not accelerating) in Normal the other day and flipped to ECO and the fuel use display shot up from 25 to 30 . Cannot beat that.

What were the numbers you observed in the Y50 as opposed to the Y51?

Personally I believe ECO mode was created for the perfect world we have yet to find. This magic utopia where you can accelerate at a measly pace usually reserved for the Prius. Stepping into the throttle to the point where the ECO light flashes yellow is going to cause the load on the engine and transmission to increase beyond what it would in Standard or even Sport mode. The Standard mode is economically minded, the shift timing is fairly conservative and people tend to complain it hangs up or hesitates before upshifting. In my neck of the woods Sport mode works better for the 35-45 mph speeds common on non Interstate roads, it tends to stick somewhere between 3 and 4 instead of going into 7 at speeds as low as 30mph.

Being from Mass myself I know the average driving speed (although posted)is in a similar range in my area actual speed often exceeds that. I bet you will have much better luck (and fun) driving your M in Sport mode. Save ECO for the Turnpike.
