i have this strange problem and i am not sure what it is. i have the VLSD & an RB25 with the mckenny driveshaft.

now on light throttle, first gear turning, it sounds like a grinding, clicking noise coming from either the transmission or the rear diff ( i can't tell).

to me personally it sounds like the splines on the driveshaft are stripped and are stripping the yoke in the transmission. (if you can imagine what that sounds like).

if i give it full throttle on the turn, the inside tire chirps and the whole rear end skips.

i've disassembled the rear diff and everything looked normal. i don't know extaly how to diagnose this so any help or suggestions is appreciated!

the whole rear subframe was from a JDM s13. it was the s13 that had a sr20 in it. (not sure if that narrows it down)

how can i check to see if it is a clutch type unit?

try to do a continuous donut. My VLSD will only do about a 360 before it becomes one tire of fire. If its a clutch type you will be able to just go and go and go in circles.

Yeah, sounds exactly like what a clutch type does.

i just had a similar instance happen to me and my diff sheared the pinion teeth off....def sucked....it had been making noise for a long while but i thought it was somewhat normal seems how i am running solid subframe bushings. check the play on your input going into your diff. if its solid then remove your driveshaft and spin the tires...if your getting noise then you know where the problem is...ill post up some pics of the pinion gear and ring gear to shwo you what can happen..i sheered off at lealst 5 teeth on the pinion and cracked everysingle other tooth on it. the noise for me was coming from the fact the teeth were changing pitch when hitting the ring gear causing it to make noise. finally the pinion couldnt take anymore and starterd sheering teeth.

i understand, but that is not the case. it only makes the noise under light load. under no load, nada.

adding friction modifier helps make the breakaway jerk less intense.

to find out if it is truly a clutch type take off the cover and look for the clutches under the side gears on the carrier. it could just need new clutches. i hate friction modifier it makes me smell like dead fish when i go home from work.

Are you sure its not your throw out bearing? Does it do it at idle or just under load while driving? I know my car started making like a clanking sound but I think its the TO bearing since it goes away when i press the clutch.

TO bearing would not cause this issue...

Well if its caused by turning then no it wouldnt be the TO. But I was asking is he hears clunking or noise when idle or driving in a line. But if its just when turning then of course not.

Im having the same problem...only clicks with clutch engaged under light load turns, in forward or reverse. will replacing the clutches eliminate this or just cause the clicking to not be so loud...
