I just recently purchased a 97 240sx that seems to have had a decent bit of audio work done to it by the previous owner. The guy took out everything he put in it but left the wiring and these "crossover" things.

The system i am putting in i took from my 92 240 and consists of 1 amp, 2 12" subs, 4 speakers, and the headunit. I noticed these crossover things while wiring up the speakers in the rear. Like i said before he left the wiring coming from the input side of the crossovers but they arnt attached to anything.

Can anyone clear up what a crossover is for me and whether or not i need to incorporate these into my system or not. Im not exactly sure what i should be hooking these onto if anything at all. Ive tied them off and left them dangle for a bit but i am going to try to clean up the wiring and do away with any clutter that isnt needed either today or tomorrow. Any help is apprectiated

Thankyou!

It was probably for a component speaker set-up. If he left the wires, you could use it for your own set!

A crossover takes the high level output from an amp, and splits the signal. Highs to tweeters, lows to mid-woofers.

Here's an example for ya:

ok the fronts have them too. He installed tweeters and actually left the front speakers in. All i know is they are kickers. the front speaker only has one wire hooked up to it though. The other wire is hooked up to a firecracker looking thing that says XS Sound on it.

Any idea? Tips on install? Im only used to the + goes to + - goes to - type of stuff. Very basics haha

That is a capacitor. Its used to filter out sound. CAPs are for High Pass, and Coils are for Low Pass.

Need more info! What kind of amp do you have? Was it used for the entire system? (rear channel for subs, front channel(s) for mids/highs)

I'm not sure of your exp level, so let me be as basic as possible. Do some research for more detailed instruction...

On the back of the deck there should be RCA jacks. This is the input for your amp. A remote turn on (blue wire) is the low voltage wire that turns on/off the amp. Run these wires along one side of the car.

For the deck, there should be a red wire-power,a yellow wire-ignition, and a green/black wire-ground. Connect the red to the fuse panel usually inside the car. The yellow, is around the steering column...(be careful of airbag wires!!) Test to see if you have voltage when the ignition is switched from off to ACC. Ground is any metal point in the dash...you should see some other wires connected, just use that.

For the amp. Depending on your amps wattage, run the proper size wire (4ga is a safe bet for upgrading later) on the opposite side of the car of the RCA run. This goes from the positive battery post (with a proper fuse), through the firewall, to your amp in the trunk, close to the subs. The amp is simple. The "+" is from your battery and the "-" is to a ground. Run a similar gauge wire to a good metal point near the amp. Make sure you scrape paint off so you get a good connection.

Now, you need to wire the speakers. That depends on your amp (4ch, 5ch...etc). If you have a 4ch, you can use the front to run the 4 speakers, and the rear to run the subs.
