My '97 QX4 has recently failed the CA emission test because apparently it can''t self test itself (ODB self comes back with system not ready) . I have taken it to a dealership and an independent mechanic, both of whom can't figure it out and have suggested I drive it more(" systems readiness self test") or take it up with the CA bureau of Auto repairs. The car passed all other aspects of the test. I have had a couple of instances where the check engine light has come on and then gone off after a couple of hours. I also had the MAF sensor replaced about a year ago. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any suggestions?

yeah that symptoms test should be done after 50 miles of driving, whenever after resetting the ECU or disconnecting the battery Have you tried hooking up an OBD2 reader to see if there are any codes? If I were you, i'd erase the codes (if any) with an OBD2 reader (free to rent at any auto parts store) , adress any problems that might come on the reader, and drive for 50 miles and test it

Thats the thing though, I had the mechnic look at the codes, there were none, then they reset it just in case. I drove like 800 miles, took it in to get it tested again and once again it failed for not being able to test itself.

Nevermind, I passed the smog check finally. The solution, go to a shabbier Smog test place where they don't do the ODBII check.
