:help hello all fellow Q lovers, new member and first post, so bear with me, please!!! been a fan of the Q for many years now(have a stillen catolog sitting around for about 6 years now) and found a 91Q in excellent condition in/out with 88k miles but with a chain-guide blown engine......nothing new,,,right? i'll be checking out the car in person sat. morning. needs a computer, also. i have a friend/mechanic who could do an engine swap. have been talking with a company from california called "atk motors", about a rebuilt 91 engine. they offer a 3 year unlimited mileage warrenty. questioned them about the engine including the updated chain guides and their tech guy "sorta" assured me the engines are rebuilt within the last 6 months so any updated parts would be included. he mentioned that the "main" problem was the tension guides being too tight and that problem was resolved. they are charging 3700$ for the engine. does anyone have any input on my direction or the company i might be dealing with on the engine???? please let me know if there is any questions i should be asking myself, or anyone else. don't want to get in over my head, but would love to drive a QQQQ!!!!!! opinions wanted-------and needed!!!!!!!!!! jeff-nuQ?

I'd be a little leary of buying a car with a blown engine. You have no way of knowing what kind of condition the transmission, differential, etc is in without having driven it before the engine died. Q's without engines rarely bring much $$ for sale... usually around $1600. With 1600+3700+installation charge+ other rehab ($2000+)? you're getting on up there where the car isn't worth it...

Want one that runs? "Q1" will be available soon... has updated chain guides too. (sounds like I'm biased but I really mean it on my advice on the car you're looking at)

Jeff:

I would definetly consider Heaths car before the arrangement you mentionen.

I think his price is gonna be very reasonable and u know u will have no surpises.

Food for thought, I just got off the phone w/ "longrunQ" another member who recently blew his engine, he will put the car up for sale soon <cheap>, try to find his email via our members registry.

If u have difficulty, email an admin such as myself.

Also I have an engine for sale myself right now, no warranty like ATK, but it is in unsually good conditon, just six days before the crash it got 7 brand new injectors (they r spendy).ALso has a new incestor harness connector, newer harness.

It also has new guides, cam chain tensioners, new oil chain, new oil chain tensioner, seals are newer, guarnteed clean engine.

If you have a buddy that would come here and pull it himself I would let it go for only $1300 ( as I dont have lift/tools/time to pull and crate it), ask anybody on this site what they think about the shape of my engine...:thumbup

BUT I still think that buying Heaths Q1 would be a less hassle and also low cost solution for Q.

Also if you leaf thru our Buy/sell/Trade section, there are a couple of Q45's for sale by members ( a few pages back)When i buy used Q's, I will <definatly> try to buy from a member of this club since we maintain our cars so well.

Fred...:)

I agree with Heath and Fred. I mean sure 3-4k sounds like a great deal on E-bay but like they said you don't know what you're getting. Guides cost at the least 1200 (I think that's what Fred paid) and a transmission will run you north of 2000. Not to mention any other various problems as a result of anything less than meticulous care of the vehicle. This is not to discourage you from buying the car. My Q has almost 246k now and despite a new transmission at 223k she's still running. So you can see that the Q is still a worthwhile investment. If it wasn't we wouldn't all be here. But like Heath and Fred said, try to buy one from a NICO member as 1) you won't get burned and 2) we take better care of our cars than anyone I know. :)

Haha, your code is useless! Most 240 owners talk like this everyday, and generally type like it too.Try English, it remains a puzzle to even the best of them!

Unless of course, you're talking about running Spoon engines, with T66 turbo's and a Motec exhaust...... :D

Damn... the slander has started.... looks like I've been converted to the darkside...

I'm not saying eBay is a bad place to buy cars... It's just that I'd minimize my deposit or not make one and be prepared to drive or fly to wherever it is to physically inspect the car before paying for it! If you're not familiar with the car, make sure the owner will let you take it in to a nearby dealer or qualified independent tech. for a full inspection...

I'd never even consider wiring money and having the car shipped to me...

You should consider buying my car, 90 Q in excellent condition with 98k miles. Doesn't burn a drop of oil and has a new trans but the old guides. I'm only an hour from you in Kenvil, NJ.

Buying a car with a blown engine and doing all the fix up will cost you a lot more than getting mine and having the guides done.

If I was to look for a 1st gen Q, sorry but I'd go for a 94' and sacrfice a the .001 seconds 0-60 and get a much more reliable car that doesn't have the guide or transmission problems that the older ones have. I'm driving my dad's old 92' with old guides (at least we think they are) and original transmission....I haven't decided yet if we're just going to drive it til it drops or fix up those two areas....

The person I was replying to had already decided to buy a 91Q! How did we get to your wanting a 94?

I've driven the 94 and there's a lot more than .001 difference between the two. The 90 feels a lot more performance oriented, at least to me.

As for reliability, once the trans has been replaced and the guides done, I don't see any reliability difference. And, if you're going to keep the car long enough, you'll eventually replace the trans in the 94 too. Its not a matter of will you or won't you, just when.

If you do the leaky valve covers at the same time as the guides, plus the water pump and a few other items, its the same situation. The cost of doing the guides when done with these other items goes down considerably. Of course, if you're going to let the valve covers lead and take you chances with the other items, and you're lucky, you save the cost of the guides.

I do, however, think these savings would be eaten up by the difference in price between a 90 and 94. Typically the price difference will allow you to do the much of this work at no great additional cost.

Hi, Jimb.

I agree with you. In 1998, I traded in my 1991Q for a 1995Q - thinking that I did not want to deal with the increased cost of maintenance, etc. - and regretted it. My 91 handled better, braked better, just felt like a large aggressive sporty sedan. My 95 Q simply does not have the same "feel". It is not bad, mind you, and I am happy with it, but it is just not as good as the 91Q. In retrospect, I should have kept my 91Q.
