help with 95 max

I have a friend who has a 95 max and has the following problems:

really bad gas mileage (should be getting at least a 100 more miles to a tank then that), car starts then stalls about five times every morning, rpms jump around like crazy and the whole car shakes till its warmed up, and it shifts harder but that doesn't bother me.

what do you guys think might be the problems?

change the plugs and all the noraml stuff that I could think of... would a bad maf throw codes? the car is not throwing any codes at all.

No codes, or no CEL? Knock sensor will throw a code, but not trigger the CEL (that could be the cause of bad mileage).

Also, your friend should be using 93 octane, but 89 shouldn't affect it that bad. What kind of mileage is he getting from a tank? I get around 330 city, and upwards of 420 hwy.

MAF will throw a code.

You could try cleaning the IACV.

I would lean toward the IACV cleaning as well as your throttle body being cleaned. once clean reset base idle.
