Hello, this may sound like a dumb question but my 240SX was rebuild with 300ZX parts. So i would like to know what differential i have, the owner told me it was "Posi" (I don't know what he meant but i THINK is a VLSD) I got under the car and is short with metal lines (like canals) and a square slot, it also says "KN24 275"

So is this a 300ZX LSD or a 240SX LSD? Is it VLSD? I'm suddenly curious cause i thought VLSD were very bad to drift (Like an open) but my car gets the tail loose with the accelerator alone, something i couldn't do with open. My tires are low profile maybe this has to do with it?

Anyways any info is appreciated, Thanks!

EDIT: Ok so i dont have a camera but i found a picture online of one that looks like the one i have

If your axles are 5 bolt than its vlsd which is good for drift, drag but there are better diffs out there.

VLSD? i heard somewhere that when their old they act like open but mine locks fine most of the time. Is there a clutch LSD for the 240? i cant find anything except for the Skyline one and the 1000$+ Kaazz ones. Its weird such a "Famous" drift car doesn't even have a clutch LSD available :(

Cusco kaaz nismo are all clutch lsd. They are out there but if you want quality you have to pay for that. If you want cheap, put a ford mustang 8.8 clutch lsd in it and get rid of your independant suspuntion. Have fun with that though. There is also quafe (how ever you spell that) and obx that makes a helical lsd like some of the corvettes have.....the choice is yours. Me personally, I just put an extra shim in my vlsd and I love it.

Extra shim? How do you do that?? I don't know how to mod a differential but if you have any info ill see if someone can shim mine. Also what mustang LSD fits the 240 does it need any mods to fit?

It would take a rediculious amount of mods to put that in a 240. As for the shim, just google how to shim vlsd. If the rear end is already tight, I would rec using nissans thin shim. There are like 5 thicknesses to choose from and I chose the thickest one and made extremely difficult to resemble.

Let's start simple:

Jack up the rear. Turn one rear wheel. If the other turns in the opposite direction, it's an open diff.

Next, get a picture of it (preferably the rear cover from a couple angles). Then we can accurately ID it.

How does it act after its been shimmed? Is it locked all the time like a welded diff? Does it just lock up easier? Ive looked at some of the stuff that came up on google but some of the advice is iffy at best. Just curious about your personal experience with shimming. Also, mine is from a J30, does anything change for that. What options do we have for getting a different final drive ration?

Nothing changes as far as shimming the vlsd because its still a r200. I went from welded, to stock vlsd and wanted more traction. At first when I shimmed it it still chirped around corners like my welded but eventually freed up. Now it locks instantly and holds tight but doesnt chirp around corners. For reasembly purposes I wouldnt use anything thicker than 1mm.
