k on my 92 240sx kade, k this is weird and i cant describe the smell quite but i have no leaks not burning oil. etc. but when im pushing my car like 6000k rev 100 miles. in 4th or 5th gear passenger window down a bit i get a wierd burning smell from outside from the car and its like a rubber/oil/brakes/clutch smell and hard to tell what. i pull over and check and i have no smell coming from either under the hood nor under the car. what could this be or coming from????? my clutch isnt slipping. i was thinking maybe transmission fluid overheating????? all fluid levels are good

any ideas???

Paint burning due to friction when going 100MPH?

Have you checked your brakes for signs of overheating? Is the water temp going too high?If there is no smell when you stop to check then it must be somethign that is not moving when stoped. This leaves things like clutch, brakes, rear end, trans fluid as the most likely things causeing the smell.

Check those and let us know what you find. Don't assume they are correct. Check them.

I've heard others mention it and I noticed the smell of transmission/gear oil when I open my windows too. Seems to be coming directly from my shifter. It hasn't bothered me enough to take apart my shifter, but I assume it is some sort of vapor leak at the shifter boot.

well the brakes are brand new. and its not brake smell. as for the shifter well i only get the smell on passenger window down side. my side window down no smell. its wierd. i have been told it may be the cat plugged. i never noticed any smell from my shifter boot.. whatever it is , is coming from outside the car

Having the smell only on one side makes me think Brakes even more. I know you say they are new but that could still be the problem. If they are haning up just a little bit they could start to smell at high speed.

As to the Cat being pluged, that is also a posability but I would expect other driveability issues.

Jack the car up and take a VERY close look at the underside. If you are over heating something to the point of smelling it then I would expect it to leave some signs of it behind. It may be small so look closely.

This one may take awhile to figure out. Stay at it and you will eventualy find it.
