hi yawl,

Q: is there a way to take off the water pump without removing the crank pulley?
pulley case (that black metal cover with measuring teeth) is getting in the way.

if the casing has to be removed, what's the pulley bolt size? 23mm ar 24mm?

also, please fill me in some important keys/what to watch for when removing and inserting.

thanks

Han

i post pics.
it's amazing; the water pump housing cracked in 2 and was just hanging there attached to the radiator fan!!

As I just did a timing belt/water pump replacement, I am quite familiar with the steps. It is so much easier just taking the crank pulley off than trying to finagal anything past the cover. Also, this is a good time to inspect your front seal. I should have measured it when I had it out but I forgot. I believe the crank bolt is a 27 or 28mm. I say that because I have 24mm socket and didn't come close. I used a 29mm socket and it took it off. I used an impact to take out the bolt and a simple puller to remove the crank pulley, although I am sure you can just wiggle it off if you wanted, it's probably even faster. Good luck!

thanks for your reply; it will help me finish the job.
the metal case is actually wraped around the pulley (back side) like a neckless.
i was even thinking about clipping it so i can get through without...

so i figured out what happen.
the night before, I removed the timing cover; broken plastic pieces everywhere.
i picked off all the pieces i saw but a sharp/small piece lodged between the water pump pulley and ribbed belt (cracked to hell already).
started the car thereby snapping the belt.
of course, i dont realize this until too late.
10 minutes into driving; loud muffler popping like bang followed by cloud of white smoke everywhere.
removed everything to find that the belt snapped and water pump cracked in two. :wtf2:
not the gasket; the housing (thick iron).
will post pics once i replace the pump/belts.

I believe the housing is aluminum. You would be best off getting an OEM water pump to prevent the housing from breaking again. Also, just remove the crank pulley, it is not much work. I did the water pump and timing belt on my J back in March for $144 with oem parts from Scottsdale Infiniti in AZ. I did not replace the auto tensioner.
