The axles or the halfshafts?

Axles just need to be hit through the spindles/uprights with a hammer and a block of wood.

Halfshafts are pretty much the same deal. Wedge a piece of wood behind the flange on the halfshaft and wack it with a hammer. They can sometimes take some force.

i guess the half shafts, trying to break apart the diff.

so i would say half shafts. i just have to hit the shafts near the rear diff and it should break apart?

yes. The shafts that go into the diff have to be hit with a hammer to be popped out of the diff. They are held in there with snap rings.

Why are you taking them out anyway?

i'm going a rear diff swap.i have a 91 parts car. and i've read that you can do a straight rear diff swap, and i've got all the bolts off and its already hanging a bit low, but its being held up by a floor jack, but the rear diff is still stuck to the rear axles. just having trouble removing them.

OHHHHH. I get what you are saying.

The axles have these nubs on the ends of them that fit into the halfshafts on the differential. Simply pull the axles away from the halfshafts (They are compressible and flexible), and get the nubs out of the halfshafts and out of the way. From there you can lower the diff all the way out of the car.

No hammer required for this.

Ok you know those 6 bolts that you took out of the axles on each side?

You can pull the axles away from the halfshafts at that point. Just pull. You will see what I mean.

hmm.yeah i've been pulling but no dice. they don't seem to want to budge. i think the rust on them is causing them to seize together, if i hit that joint area where i removed the bolts, will it do any damage to the diff?or another alternative such as using a torch to break it free.

Go ahead and give it a little smack. It won't hurt anything. Just smack it on the axle side, not the halfshaft side.

They come apart really easy if it's not rusty, so im sure rust is your problem.

yeah i would have to say its the rust, as it would be a key reason why i can't find anything in regards of axle removal from the diff. just the hub.so that would definitely explain it.

alright i'm going to get cracking on it again.hopefully it'll drop down this time.

thanks again for the response. i'll keep you updated shortly.

naed!!!your the man!!good ol' whack and that puppy came loose. had it whack it hard though. but its loose and it out.

i thought there were markings on it to identify it was a vlsd.but its out. and i spun it and both of them turn in the same direction, so thats always a good sign.

you spun what? one of the output shafts(that go to the read wheels)? or the input shaft?(from the driveshaft)
