i have a leak coming from the front of the vlsd (where the driveshaft connects to the pinion flange) and i think i have a worn out front oil seal. does anyone know how to replace this? do i need the vlsd to be off the car or can i just unbolt the driveshaft and do it while the vlsd is still on the car? also does anyone know the part number for the front oil seal?

it can be done with the diff in the car. remove the driveshaft, and then you'll have to break the big nut that holds the companion flange on. that will be fun with no studs to use for leverage. my best solution for that would be to thread a couple of bolts with matching nuts and use a prybar to gain some leverage while you break that nut loose (which needs to be retorqued to 137-217. Ouch)

then you can pull the front oil seal out and replace it with a suitable drift. Then you just get the companion flange's nut retorqued and you're good to go.

Assuming you have a VLSD out of a 240 or a non-turbo Z, you should be able to order the front diff oil seal for your year 240. All R200 diffs use the same seals. And I believe even the R220s use the same, but don't quote me on that.

thanks alot. i have an electric impact gun, so the nut shouldn't be a problem. guess i better contact midway parts to get the seal.

one more question. does the seal need to be flush with the outside of the housing?

don't know. just look at where yours is placed and make a note of it before you pull it out.
