Alright so, I just bought an '85 turbo a few weeks ago and we're doing the whole timing belt shin-dig. However, we can't get the timing sprocket off. We've wedged screw-drivers between the sprocket and plate, bent the plate up a bit (it's ok we're replacing it); seriously just can't get it off. A mechanic suggested getting a torch and heating it up slightly to get it to expand, so we might try that tomorrow. Also there was a suggestion of drilling holes in order to get a pulley to get it off, but that means buying a new sprocket.

In doing this job we found out that there was an after-market harmonic balancer on the crank, and it looks like whoever put it on torched it on and messed up the alignment on the pulley where the key slides through, so it seems the sprocket could've been wedged in whenever that was done.

ALSO, I'm curious... we had issues getting the balancer off and ended up scratching it a bit on the sides. We figure we can sand it down so that it doesn't mess up the belt. Does anyone oppose?

This is what it looks like from whoever put this on...

Looks like they drilled the crap out of it. :-\

The sprocket and plate you're talking about should be one piece. What does your replacement look like?

getting those crank sprockets off cna be a real PITA, a popular method is to drill and tak a couple of holes int he front fo the gear then you cna use a puller to pull it out, I had one I had to cut into the pulley top and bottom with a cutoff wheel and then chissel intot he grooves fro what felt like an eternity to finally get the thing to brake loose from the shaft

start with heat, next step isthe drill and tap puller method

This is the plate. Yeh the heat is our first step, then the drilling.

Tried the heat, nothing. So it's on to the drilling.
