Autozone, I hope you see a precipitous drop in business for this travesty.
http://radio.foxnews.com/toddstarnes/to ... bbery.html
Devin McLean and his store manager were about to close the AutoZone in York County, Va. when a gunman barged into the store.

“He pulled a gun from his waist band and demanded me and my manager go back into the office,” McLean told Fox News.

At some point, McLean was left in a restroom while the gunman made the manager open the store safe. That’s when McLean, a 23-year-old Air Force veteran, bolted through a side door and ran to his truck.

He returned through the front door holding a Glock 40 – pointed directly at the masked robber.

“I told him to freeze and to drop his weapon,” McLean told Fox News.

Instead, the robber took off – last seen running down the street from the store.

“I watched him run down the street,” he said. “I came back inside and made sure my manager was okay and he called the police.”

The York County Sheriff’s Dept. believes the bandit is responsible for as many as 30 robberies across the region.

“One of the officers asked why I didn’t shoot the robber,” McLean said.

Sheriff J.D. Diggs told Fox News he considers McLean to be a hero.

“He did a very brave thing,” the sheriff said. “He put himself in jeopardy in an attempt to make sure his friend was safe. He did a very brave thing.”

The part-time worker’s manager was especially thankful and credited McLean with saving his life.

But two days after the robbery – and just a week before Thanksgiving – McLean was fired.
Well you can bet I sure as hell won't spend another dime at a business that treats people this way. More importantly than making AutoZone hurt I want to help this poor guy get another job. I have an idea. I have drafted the following letter to Advance Auto Parts, a local competitor.
Mr. Jackson, authorized official,
Thank you for taking the time to read this, I will respect your time and get right to it. If you have not heard the story I will bring it to your attention. http://radio.foxnews.com/toddstarnes/to ... bbery.html

An Autozone employee used a personally-owned firearm to foil a store robbery and potentially saved the life of a fellow employee. Autozone’s response was to fire him for violating their gun policy. We now have a veteran and soon to be father without a job for doing a brave and selfless thing. That the backlash against Autozone will come is a given and as a gun-owner myself I will certainly join the chorus of folks that will never do business with them again. I am more concerned about the victim, though, Mr. McClean.

I am not aware of your policies at Advance in this area. Even if they are the same as Autozone, your organization has not done this terrible thing so it doesn’t enter in the discussion. If you agree that regardless of policy, this was a detestable thing to do, I think we are on the same page.
What we have here is an amazing opportunity to not only help a deserving person days before Christmas, but also, let’s face it, strike a serious marketing bonanza. Here is a hero in many peoples’ opinion punished by his employer, your competitor, for saving a life and company assets. Imagine the good will and subsequent customer loyalty you would reap from seeking this person out and securing him a job at one of the several stores in the York Virginia area.

Regardless of any antigun policy, if you have one, making a statement that there are rules and then there is common sense and decency would explain your offer and not undermine this policy by hiring a person who was fired for bringing a weapon onto his previous employer’s property as the context is legitimate. I hope you will consider this proposal and help Mr. McClean days before Christmas in his time of crisis.
Thank You
I have sent it to the media relations department at that company and I hope it makes it to the attention of the CEO Mr. Darren Jackson. Here is the MR address.

Please help me in this effort to help this brave man in his time of need so close to Christmas.

Autozone is a s*** company, I worked for them for 13 months once upon a time and the way that company treats their employees is atrocious.

Given that it's a Fox News story, I'm going with the probability that the guy was always late or something else. Fox never gives real news, they just like to stir up emotions.

FOX News wrote:Television station WTKR reported that McLean violated corporate policy by leaving the store and returning with a weapon.

The station spoke to a representative from the company’s corporate office who said they had a “zero tolerance policy for employees having weapons inside the store.”

An AutoZone spokesman told Fox News they will not discuss the matter.

“It was a surprise to me,” McLean said. “I did the right thing. I saved the company $2,000. I saved one of their manager’s lives – and you’re letting me go? It was a slap in the face.”
Counter-factual: you got yourself killed, Autozone faces a lawsuit, and your kid doesn't have a dad.

"No guns in store, no exceptions" may seem stupid for the freak occurrence that FOX News stumbled upon, but it's probably a pretty smart policy for what it was made for: idiot coworkers arguing over meaningless crap. Sucks that he lost his job, but I'm having trouble getting worked up over this.

I'm not arguing for him to get his job back with Autozone. They are within their rights to fire him just like consumers are within their rights to punish them by taking their business elsewhere. I'm trying to find him a new job.

I think a quick trip to York should be in my future. Autozone surely lost what little business I tossed their way over this.

Agreed. I'm done with AutoZone. I didn't even like them all that much before this happened.

I'm more shocked that Fox was on the up 'n up with this story than anything else. He should get a job for a real parts store next.

I was going to Autozone in the morning for an 02 sensor. Think I'll drive the extra distance to O'Reilly's now.
