I have a 1991 240sx, Automatic (go ahead and laugh) with a KA24DE. When I go into reverse without braking, there is a grinding noise coming from the rear driver side wheel. The sound goes away when I brake while reversing, or leave the emergency break halfway in reverse. My friend and I checked the rear brakes pads on the two back tires, and they seem to have plenty of metal on them. Any suggestions?

Also, when I start the car and rev around 3,000 rpm there is a weird rattling noise coming from the front of the car, and also a grinding noise that comes and goes while driving forward.

I dunno, my daily driver automatic is giving me all kinds of weird grinds and noises! Your help is appreciated.

check your belt pulleys, it may be the idler pulley or ac compressor pully. a good way to test them is to take off the belt and start the eng. do not run for too long

I will try that. The fan sounds louder than normal when driving, especially at around 50mph and on. It kind of sounds like a Vacuum. Any other suggestions?

The rattling noise is most likely timing chain rattle, it happens with KAs. Some people can take off the top chain guide and it gets better. Timing chain tensioner just may be getting old and wore out and they are a pain to replace so many people just let it go.

As for the rear grinding noise, it sounds like a brake problem. Is there any any rust on the rear rotor surface inside and outside coming in contact with the brake pads. Also check and make sure there isn't a huge rust build up in the outside tip of the rotor.

The grinding noise in reverse was a brake problem. I changed my brakes 2 days ago and the noise is gone! Now there isnt a rattle noise in the front, but the car does sound louder than usual. I tried to spin the fan by hand and its giving me alot of resistance. do you think its just the fan clutch, or something else?

Fan clutch is easy to come by. There should be very little resistance while cold.
