HELP!! Temperature gauge 2002 nissan sentra se-r

I just bought a 2002 nissan sentra se-r auto. On the temperature gauge. when i first turn the car on. the arrow move to the hot side. Is this normal? I talk to the seller he told me when he first bought the car it was like that. Any help will be appreciate. -thanks
