Well, the reason they say it may not fix it, is because sometimes with these older cars, there could be 3 things wrong, and only one code showing. Ou fix that code o find the other 2 codes show up. It's just part of the maintenance of an older vehicle.

As far as the reverse, no clue. Exhaust, yeah could be a loose joint, hanger, pieces in the cats. Get someone to lay next to the car and rev it up a few times. See if u can figure out the vicinity of the sound.
