Im trying to get my de swap to run good and it just doesnt want too. The problem was when I started my engine which I got from a junk yard with a 110000 mi on it, it was spiting lots of nasty smoke. THe smoke looked black so I didnt think that it was oil but Im not to sure. I went out and got some sea foam, I heard that was really good stuff to clean your engine. well it worked well in the gas and stopped most of the smoke. shortly after I put a can into my oil and was running the car and putting some of the stuff into the brake booster line and I noticed smoke comming up from in my engine compartment. I looked under the car to see were it was coming from and saw two problems; oil was leaking from my crank case (seemed only when at high revs) from the crank shaft hole and the smoke was coming from my cat which was glowing orange. First off am I going to need to replace the seal behind the harmonic balancer or is it just leaking because there is too much fluid due to the pint of sea foam. second do you have to take off the entire crank case cover to replace the seal behind the balancer? third is it normal for a cat to be glowing orange and smoaking while performing this sea foam cleaning? Fourth and after the fact is this sea foam buisness a bad thing? Any help or pointers would be great. I just started trying to be my own mecanic when I bought the car a month or two ago so im not that knowlegable if you guys need any more info let me know. Thanks Ian

you need to replace the front crank seal. you can pull the balancer/pulley assembly off and pop out the old seal and install a new one.

cats usually only glow orange when there is a restriction in the exhuast. but I am not sure what this sea foam stuff these guys are running through their cars. I had never heard of it before till I found this website. I usually use a decarb kit that is supplied to our dealer that has a device rigged into the intake tube with a injector on the end. maybe the seafoam causes it to run hotter??? no idea.

you wont be able to see anything physically wrong with it. like I said it may have just made it run hotter with the see foam stuff in it. if it doesnt do it during normal operation I wouldnt worry to much about it.
