I need to feather the gas peddle to keep it running.sometimes it loops for a couple seconds then sits nice at idle. whenever it is really cold, it starts, almosts stalls then sits at idle.it there and idle air valve or something on these cars that needs to be cleaned.

Try cleaning your throttle body and idle air control valve. Idontknow how savy you are about cars but it could just be a stoppedup air filter.

Well you are the guy to ask then

My buddy and I are going to try to put in a piston and rings inone cylinder on a Ford Escort 1999 for a friend. We are notremoving the engine. New cylinder head gasket has alreadybeen installed. We have the tools for the job includingthe micrometers need to measure hole size etc. We are justgoing to spec it out first, then hone out the cylinder, and thenspec again. If out of spec we are just going to replace it andthen sell the car. No plans to pull the engine.

Any suggestions?

should be alright to come from the bottom if that is the plan. Keep lots of cutting fluid moveing when honeing. I would not install the head gasket and head until the piston is replaced.
