Just Bought A 1992 Q45 176,000 Miles.... I Got A lot of Concerns....

Q.1 It Idles At About 600-650 but when Im driving it vibrates like crazy when I hit 30-35 mph... fuel injectors or brakes because my on dash computer is tellin me my brake pad are worn.....

Q.2 My Cabin Lights Wouldn't Come On So I Checked My Engine Fusebox... Fuse Was Blown... I replaced the fuse and now the lights won't come off! Even When I close The doors They Stay On...Relays Possibly?

Q.3 My Windshield Wipers Wouldn't Stop Going... I Had To Disconnect My Windshield Wiper Motor.... Relays?

Q.4 Also If There Was Bad Gas In My Car How Would It React? I ask Because the Car Was Sitting For A While....

Please Help Me... I don't Want To Start Investing Money In A Worthless Piece Of Garbage ... I Hope Its Not Because The Body Is Almost Flawless And The Engine Runs Great...

On every 90-93 Q45 we've done a prebuy [or after purchase] inspection on in the last 5 years [ we've done about 50] the recommended repair list varied from a low of $3,000 to a high of $11,000 [Q45a].

The above was using oem parts at MSRP and a labor rate of $65-$85 per hour.

The lowest figure ones were from our previous customers who had lots of things repaired but a final list of $3,000+ forced them to sell.

Many people are or know decent mechanics/technicans and can ebay/junkyard parts and do some of it themselves.

The first step is to pay an expert technican [who works on Q DAILY] to test and prepare a list and estimate, then we can help you decide!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a side note an old 90 Q owner [sold 4 years ago and bought a JAG]came by last week for work on his wifes LS400. He said he wished he had kept his 270k Q and just spent the $7,500 for a replacement JDM engine and transmission..................other than that his 14 year old car was perfect after all he had spent the $20k to get it there.

Old Lux V8 are often almost as expensive as brand new lesser vehicles.

Obviously a lighter V6 is about 2/3 the cost to maintain.

Thas basically my list right there... im semi experienced with nissans n infinitis... I did a engine swap in my 1995 j30 and a 1997 240sx that were both successful... I was hopin one of the techs has experienced these problems before... I just need to know where to start really... the q was pretty well maintained sunroof works and a lot of the more major and expensive repairs have been done before... also put into consideration I paid less than 1k for it...

HINT, HINT.......Why would ANYBODY sell a well maintained, correctly operating q45 for less than 1000 dollars?

Because they found out it needs or soon will need thousands of dollars in repairs to stay roadworthy

Consider the 1000 you paid as opportunity costs only....the opportunity to invest 3-6 thousand plus in the near future to have a correctly functioning reliable vehicle

the above list are common replacement items on all old q45...Dont let cosmetics fool you

Look at driveshaft center bearing, transmission and engine mountsCheck wiper amplifier, timing [delay] control module [for wipers and lights], and stalk switch per FSM.

Use Consult to look for engine problems

Um... I think so... I might be wrong.... don't I just push the wiper control all the way up?

Pretty easy to check the pads and ohm test the injectors. As you may know, injectors are a common trouble item on these cars. The lights and wipers sound like they are related.

"Where is the timing delay control module located?"

Behind the shift lock control unit on driverside, but don't buy a new one YET since they rarely fail...............spend a few hours following step by step diagnosis proceedure outlined in FSM probably a wiring short or bad door switch.

Download a copy of the Q FSM you lost or neglected to make sure came with the used car you purchased.

Spend a week/month studying the thousands of pages in FSM or pay a competent technican who has already done so?

Yes. some people confuse the interval switch with the wiper switch.

Sounds like you have a lot of circuit tracing to do.

If you don't have the bible size FSM that comes with the car, look for one on eBay (not CD version as there were none). 1994 was different enough it might not help you.

Sounds like the fsm is my answer huh..... a 1992 q45 fsm is like finding a $2.00 a gallon gas station... im still not too sure exactly where the delay module is... can u point me a little better? A pic would be great...

I'll bet if you call around Infiniti dealers [150 in US] they will have some old grease covered manuals to sell you..............any 90-93 will function well.

If they won't sell you one you might rent it to copy the few hundred pages you will need for electricals.

At school you must come to class with your textbook. Not meaning to sound difficult but you need to read the textbook to troubleshoot.

Even attempting to work on a Q without the FSM is foolish, dangerous, and wasteful of time [yours and ours].

KNOWN Electrical problems are the minor ones compared to actual mechanical wear and problems.

For Q expert electronic technican who actually has the car in possesion vs over Inet.

They're even hard to find in our own Infiniti Parts forum. If you're patient someone will eventually list one. Test the waters and start a WTB thread in the parts forum. If you want it quick you can usually find at least a couple of 90-93 FSM's on Ebay but you're probably going to pay $50-$65 for it. Happy hunting.
