i have a problem with my 93 j30 this morning. i don't know what it is.

i woke up today to get ready to go to work. got outside to warm up my car or to get all the fluid moving. i usually let it warm up for 2- 5 minutes. i noticed my gas tank was half full, because i've been waiting for the right time to pour in my chevron fuel injector cleaner. i had not done that yet. i start to drive about 1/4 to 1/2 mile i notice my gas/fuel gauge starting to go down all the way to empty in 5-10 seconds. i paniced as the light turns green at 5:15am. i made an illegal U- turn to get to the nearest gas station. on my way there the gas gauge starts to go back up and stops at less than 1/4 tank. before i parked my car yesterday i remember having at least close to 1/2 tank of gas. i live in santa monica, CA i don't know if weather has anything to do with it, but current temperture in the morning was around 50-60 degrees. so i finally stop at the first gas station i found, which was a shell. i poured in my fuel injector cleaner than pump premium gas and drove off to work. that problem hasn't happened yet. im still at work till 6pm, so i wont know till than. any info on what might have happen is appreciated if you hav any questions feel free to ask as i am writing this in as much detail i can remember.

thanks in advance guys i know someone here has the answer. :help :help

Probably a glitch in the sending unit. It's basically a float with a variable resistor that tells the fuel gauge how much gas is in there. If it looses contact for some reason, the gauge would probably bottom out. You might want to set your trip meter at each fill-up as a backup until you see if the problem happens again. It's possible you got a small bit of debris in the sending unit that worked its way on to the filter now and you'll never have the problem again - or it could come back... just have to wait and see.

pimpin, bad fuel level sending unit will not strand you, as you are not actually out of gas, just cuz the indicator says so.:)when u filled up how many gallons did u put in?less than you should be putting in, if the tank was really that low right?

even a real bad maf, would not run the car dry that fast.

well, when this happened i went to the gas station immediately. i ended up putting about 8.45 gallons to fill the tank up. im not sure how many gallons it holds. i usually look the other way when i complete the transaction, because of the gas price hike. scares me. this time i looked and it was 8.45 to fill the tank. not quit sure what i had before. i thought was half, but i guess not.

If you were leaking that much gas that quickly, you would be able to smell it from a block away.In summary: Your fine just keep track of your levels w/ the trip odometer until u have the sending unit replaced (if that is indeed, what it turns out to be).

Call Joe at Scottsdale at 18882165328. Also, there are some wrecking yards around here. I go to one in Wilmington at 418 E Anaheim St. Their prices aren't great, so if you find a better one locally let me know. Sorry to hear about the bike. I had one stolen a few years ago too. '99 TL1000R that I had owned all of *4* days! Perhaps fortune in disguise for both of us. L.A. is about the worst place to ride a motorcycle.
