Help. My 240sx just failed smog test.

I drive 1989 240sx. All stock except air filter.

I use Chevron 91 Octain gas with a bottle of injector cleaner every tank.

The hose in blue circle is not connected because my air filter is aftermarket.

What is my problem? How can pass the test? please help me.

ps. This picture is from internet. Not my car.

if im not mistaken, that tube is important for smog checks. put back the stock intake and try it again.

EGR. That tube supplies air to the cat, not really too important when you've got it totally warmed up but you should have it.

Test the EGR, at the back of the engine on the intake manifold side, you'll see a saucer shaped thing, connected to it, you'll see another saucer shaped thing further down. That one that's further down is the EGR. Push up on the diaphram of the EGR with the car running. Does it stumble, nearly die? Is the hose that runs from the BPT (the saucer shaped thing connected to the back of the intake manifold IIRC) in good shape? It takes alot of heat and can collapse under vacuum or will have a hole burned into it. Replace that, almost always have to with high NOx.

+1 on the EGR, it helps reduce combustion chamber temps down so it won't produce excessive NOx

to add:

that hose : try to keep it away from the main air filter... route a heater hose down towards the fender & attatch one of those small cone filters found in the ricer section of a parts store. Search AIV for more info if you do want to remove it...

reason: if the reed valves w/in the unit goes bad, it'll backfire/spit out exhaust crap ie, water, co2, etc... & you don't want that stuff going back into your intake.

Check the vac lines first. Then move onto the EGR.

clean out your MAF sensor.run some SeaFoam in your crank case, your fuel, and a vacuum linr on your intake.

This help me pass emmissions when i failed the first time in my 89 240.
