On my 89 240 i am having a leaking problem. Some how water is getting in the spare wheel well. I mean a lot of water like at least a gallon. It is not getting in from the hatch in anyway so how else could it get in there. I checked to make sure. The hatch is sealed tight and the carpet in the truck is dry. Any idea how the water is getting in there. Is the gas tank pressed up right agianst the spare tire wheel well? If there is some room i want to drill a few 1/4" holes in the whell well so the water can drain out. This is a very annoying problem( ) because when i take off or stop i can hear is swishing around in the truck. SOME ONE HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Are you sure it is plain water.. also is the headliner or either of the pillars wet at all.. my 91 fastback hasa rear wiper with a hose that leads up to the sprayer...it was rotten and leaked in the back....took 3 weeks to find it... might be somewhere to check.

that is a very common problem on the hatches. What it was for me and many other people was the rubber gaskets that surround the left and right taillights. They are made of butyl rubber which starts breaking down around 8 years or so. There is a pretty good write up on how to fix it at http://www.240sx.org/faq/index.html, look under "water leak." Wasn't too bad, took me about 3 hours and I wasn't really working the whole time. The spare well already has a drain hole, if you take the tire out it is in the well towards the front of the car. It is normally covered with a black rubber plug. I just took the plug out before I fixed the problem on my old car so the water wouldn't accumulate.
