I searched and found nothing even close to helping...

I swapped a new SOHC into my coupe (the old one was shot) and somebody dropped the end of the distributor out...obviously, the timing is way off when we try to start it. I know how to set the crank, but none of us know how to set the distributor...

Any help would be great, thanks!

if you look at the "how to remove timing chain guides" sticky on nico, it has an example. I'm not sure if it works for SOHC but, set your car to tdc. Then put the distributor in and rotate the distributor rotor so you can put the cap on right at the distributor wire that goes to the #1 spark plug.

See that's the problem...we can set the rotor, but ont he SOHC, theres an entire shaft that runs down to the other end (and I think to the oil pump? not sure...) and that is what the guy dropped out...I have no idea where it has to be set...

for that to fall off, the oil pump has to come off. Anywhoo, setting it is easy. Set motor at tdc, remove oil pump, align dot on shaft with punchmark on oil pump, reinstall very carefully, so as to not turn the shaft at all during installation. After that, the distributer only fits one way, turn the rotor till it sets down in there. To double check it, the rotor should be pointing directly at the number 1 firing position when distributer is fully seated. Don't forget to make sure your oil pump is primed and ready to go aferwards.

^ We did all of that...now what happened:

Found out there was just a bunch of bad gas in the lines, so we got some out, hooked it back up, and it started (w/ the dist. all the way advanced)...then we realized that there was a horrible noise coming from the motor - real bad chatter, sounding like valves or lifters. Then we realized that there was absolutely no oil under the valve cover at all...so the oil pump is not pumping...after all of the cranking and letting it run, shouldn't it have started to pump oil? Then, we put in a new pump, set all the timing back, and now the freakin car won't start yet again! Oh, and it overheats almost instantly (or its just a fault gauge, b/c it goes to operating temp on the gauge almost instantly)

OMG this thing is really making me hate KAs/240s! Not to mention my boyfriend's car won't start either...

I'm guessing you're a chick? I'm not being mean, but you stated that you have a boyfriend. More power to you!

As for your situation, you should always put oil in the pump before installing it (especially on a new pump).

To run, an engine basically needs three things: air, fuel, and spark (and then of course there's timing of all of those too). You need to know what you're not getting. Since you swapped in a different motor, make sure all of your wiring is connected correctly.

yes, im a 'chick'. my boyfriend and i got the car running again (the timing was off). were still having problems getting oil to pump up into the head. the engine was primed, the wiring was done correctly, and the pump had oil in it. ???

the SOHC motor came from a running '90 hatch. we cant figure out why this motor is giving us so many problems. if anyone knows how to correct this problem, or would like to come help us out, please email me: [email protected]

thanks a bunch!

Perhaps the line going into the pump is clogged? How long was the engine out of service prior to your install? Just trying to think of why the pump wouldn't be doing its job. I assume you guys found the oil pump shaft. That shaft runs off of the a worm gear on the crank. Without it, the oil pump won't be turned by the motor and you won't have any oil flow.

if the oil pump wasnt turning neither would your dist. it runs off the pump shaft. Just turning your motor over isnt fast enough to create oil pressure. Let it run with the oil fill cap off or take the valve cover off and run it if oil is pumping this will cause a mess but worth knowing if you have oil pressure or not. Temperature problems has to be faulty gauge or incorrect wiring no way possible for temp to reach that high instantly unless ran for awhile cut off then cut right back on. Hope this help;s your problem let us know ...Keep it sideways

The engine was out for about 4-5 days (at the most)...we let the car run witht he cap off and it never got any oil...it just doesn't make any sense to me why it went from running perfectly fine in my friend's car to running like crap in mine!

Oh, and it puffs out a TON of smoke...I've never seen a car smoke that much, it's HORRIBLE...I don't have a clue what is going on, but I have to hurry b/c my Supra's registration is due in Aug. and I want to have the 240 running b4 I have to pay $70!
