okay, so im about to buy this 89 sohc 240sx, and i took it for a test drive, it drives perferctly fine, but when u go to stomp on the gas the rpm's will jump to the top, and the car will slowly want to speed up , but if u take your time on the gas and build up speed slowin it will drive fine, its just when u go to smash on it the rpm will max out as if it was slipin im not to sure if thats what it is doin, any thoughts on what the problem is? and if i do buy this car after i fix that problem what should be the first thing i should mod on it

I call that a slipping clutch, unless it's an automatic, then I call it a good candidate for a 5-speed swap.

It almost sounds like the clutch is going south. Maybe get that checked out.

In terms of what to mod first, I always like to suggest suspension. You won't get immediate power obviously, but your ride will definatly feel a lot tighter/stiffer/responsive. The car is already decently quick for cruising applications, making the suspension work better will feel many times better than dumping money into intake/exhaust/header.

Suspension, then drive, drive, drive, Turbo/Engine swap

Edit: If you can snap some pictures, of the body, and the underside, maybe even the interior. The guys on NICO will be happy to let you know how much it's actually worth. More importantly, how much is the seller asking for the car?

all the way. First mod on any car should be adjusting the loose nut behind the wheel... then suspension.

If it's just slipping under hard acceleration...the clutch is on it's way out...very soon I might add.

Edit: I mean drive, drive, drive - as in learn to drive the car, and get used to it, you'll have lots of fun with the car on stock power with good suspension trust me. And then once you're ready, and have a good amount of money to spend, chuck some money into a turbo + goodies.

Did you try to drive it up a hill? You could probably drive it gingerly for maybe a month, but it wouldn't be very safe.

He meant drive the car until you understand how it acts with you behind the wheel.

yah i can see that happenin, i might as well save up for a light flywheel and a new clutch, when i start the car on a cold start it makes that sorta knockin/tickin noise, should i get the timein chain guids rebuilt? the sound go's away after awhile after it warms up, it only has about 132 though on the engine

This is a quick response thread!

The engine with the SOHC's I believe...still need the timing chain guides removed. They are kind of faulty and have a tendancy to snap in the crank case and F a lot of S up. So if it's making a rattle can ticking noise, open that sucker up and take out the guides. You'll need to search to find out which guide(s) you'll need to take out.

If your timing chain is loose enough to start grinding against the crank case it's time to change that thing anyway.

You need to remove the upper and lower timing chain guides (at least that's what I had to do on the DOHC version) I don't want to go through the hassle of posting the pics, but the guides get chewed up quite badly.
