I have a compressor and air tools but I didn't think that would be the best way to go about removing parts such as those.

I do it all the time, on all sorts of engines. It will not rotate the engine at all, and will not put any sort of stress on the cam or the chain. The hex cut on the cam, before the first lobe is there so that you could easily align the cam to the sprocket once you are putting the sprocket back on.

I thought the same way but figured since I am replacing both my cams and timing chain taking an impact to them couldn't do much harm. Regardless the impact took them off in a breeze.

I can't say I would do it the same way though if I planned on keeping the cams and chain.

I just did my head gasket and I used a 27mm end wrench on the the hex portion of the cams. You might want to get one of those to insure proper torque when you tighten them back down. Are you going to take the timing chain cover off to make sure you have the mark correct on the crank gear.

As long as you are not using the air tools to take your head of or any other part that has a loosening sequence you will be fine. Hold the timing chain while you use the impact wrench to take the bolt out of the sprocket and you will notice that the chain is fairly loose while the impact wrench hammers on the bolt. If you have a worthy impact wrench it will take that bolt of in a matter of a few seconds.
