I broke off the antenna on my '94 J30. Bought a replacement mast from AntennaMastsRUs but i'm having an impossible time removing part of the old mast from the tube.

I had to pull the whole power unit out of the car. The bottom segment (about 12") of mast won't come out of the silver tube with black plastic threaded top. It slides most of the way out and then bang it stops like it's not meant to pull out. But i can't install the new mast until the old one comes out. Note that the top 2 feet or so of the old mast and the entire geared white cable have been removed. It's just the bottom segment and i think also a metal sleeve that is about 4" long (at least that's what the new one has).

Anyone ever done this before with success?

Mine just pulled right out after loosening the base ring. But it was replaced because the plastic gear strip was stripped.

Turned the radio on after a good freezing rain. DOOH !!

You were lucky. I can't get the bottom of my mast out either. I'm having the worst luck with this car for the last 2 weeks.

If anyone has any suggestions to get it out, I'm all ears. I've tried PB blaster to try loosening it up to know avail.

This seems like a hard thing to do but it's actually not that hard. You want to pull the colored piece that matches your body of your car. See people usually replace them when the pieces are broken on the inside but your not going to be able to pull the mast if your plastic piece is still inside the gear box attached. Try pushing the mast all the way down then pulling out the unit. From there you want to unscrew the unit and remove the plastic pieces, or piece, when you free these pieces or piece up out of the gears then you should be able to pull out the antenna with no problem. Think of it as trying to pull a dog toy from a dogs mouth, you cant get a hold of it until the dog lets go, or you just yank the hell out of it

I bought the part from autozone and it was the same as the OEM. Same manufacture and same part number. looked identical. it was about $50. I ended up bringing it to a local mechanic (I just moved so I don't know anyone yet) and they refused to use the part because (they say) it is aftermarket. Charged me $250 for their part, which was identical to the part I had bought for $50. I wasn't very happy about it but work is keeping me too busy to do anything about it so I ended up way over paying. They also quoted me $450 to fix my antenna!!!!! (I can't get the base of the mast out). That is just unbelievable. They also busted the assembly trying to get it out the mast, so now I'm buying a new assembly and just going to fix it myself. Guess I'm still looking for a new mechanic.
