I have a 98 i30 and i am trying to replace the antenna mast. i have gone through many post on how to remove it. They all say to turn on the radio and the mast should come out but it will not. Ive tried pulling on it and twisting it out with pliers. I dont know what else to do. Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions on what i am doing wrong or that i need to be doing?

This is what i am down to.

If it's like the Legend I had, it is actually "compress fit" into the very top of motor housing and a few hard jerks on the bottom telescoping part straight up will break it free. You may have to push the bottom mast part down some to give it some momentum upwards. Sort of like a "slide hammer" motion.

The new one goes in the same way with some force downwards, that is...once the cable mentioned below is threaded into the motor and before the top metal ring is screwed down.

If yours doesn't come out when powered on, the plastic cable may have broken, or no power is going to the motor. You should at least hear it running though...

be careful. when the motor is pulling down the mast, you want someone moving the antenna up and down (at your direction) till you get the antenna actually seat inside the motor. What happened to me, is I was trying to get the bottom part of the new antenna in the motor housing (and didn't get it in) and I guess because it was short, it broke the plastic thread with the teeth on it. I just installed another one and I had it seated in, and it took fine. it makes a noise now towards the end. I think I should have put a light coat of grease on it. just my thought on the grease. could have nothing to do with nothing.
