Does anyone know if shorter gears are better for turbo or longer? I was looking at the R32 vlsd(short gearing 4.3), j30 vlsd (middle 3.9) and the z32 vlsd (long 3.6). Which one do you guys think will be better for the kat?

I would swap in the taller gears personally, Cause I like a bit more top end speed. It really depends on what kind of driving your doing. If its drag only, a shorter may be ok, unless your turning 9's.

I'm plannin to Auto-X, and maybe drag here and there at the strips. Do you guys think the shorter gears will help me get out of the corners faster? Will I even notice a difference between the short and long gears?

We swapped in a set of 430's in a buddys mustang, the difference over stock was crazy. Of course I think the stock gears were 289's err somthin like that.

It really depends on a lot of factors. Shorter gearing will really only make a difference in 1st gear in terms of straight line accelleration. The average acceleration from there on out, will be similar to having the original gearing. As far as in an autocross, it depends more on the course. If the course has you dipping down into some slow speed corners, shorter gearing may help since most cars will be able to run the whole course in 2nd gear. But conversely, it could force you to have to use 3rd gear if there are any longer straights or wide turns. And Autocross courses are harder to set up and predict for since they are constantly changing.

think of it this way: if you have a big laggy turbo shorter gears will keep you on your power band better, but you have to shift more. If thats the case then you don't wanna change your rear end, you probably should look into a shoter gearing kit for your tranmission. Rear end gearing is mainly 1st and 5th, so to speak (off the line and top end). Higher gearing also wouldn't be bad on the highway, keep you out of boost and into better MPG.
