help plz install distributor

hey I have a ka24de I am trying to put the distributer back on but it gets stuck when I put it in. It wont go in all the way I somewhat pushed it but I didnt whip out the hammer of anything. I looked in the manual and it says the rotor has to be set to the #1 spark position. Now I am not sure if I am doing this right since this is the first time I ever took off a distributer can someone explain to me how to determine the spark position. does it have anything to do with the little dot on the gear at the end on the distributer lining up with something on the opening on the front cover? IDK plz advise me I need to get this car together
