I just locked my keys in my '93 convertible. I'm not that stupid really. I just bought it yesterday and for some reason even though the door locks aren't electric. It locks itself when I shut the door!! Any clues on the best way to get back into it? I have a friend going to pick up his slim jim. Any tips on using it? Anyone else have success getting back intio their car without keys? Anyone know why my door(s) (not sure if passenger side does it also) locks itself when I close it. I'm bummed. I can't afford a locksmith I just spent every cent I had yesterday on the car. Can someone help me please? Thanks -Glyph

ha! this happened to me a few weeks ago. Ok, this is what you do:

1. Take a dry cleaner coat hanger (the kind that has a paper roll to hang pants on) and bend it out. Form a small hook at one end and an small...inch long "L" at the other end.

2. using the "L" end in your hand - jimmy your car thru the window. You should be able to slide it in from an angle, from the top of your window. Since you have a vert - the top is pliable and you can get the thing in thru rubber.

3. You can figure out the rest I hope..but if not: Try to do your best to get that hooked end into the groove of the inside door handle..and when you do...don't yank just yet...take a breath and settle your self, and then yank in ONE SWIFT motion. Make sure motion is straight, like you are pulling back a pool stick.

Note: I waited for two hours - for a buddy to help me out when I did this. I eventually tried it for the FIRST TIME in a vert, and opened the door in the first try.

BTW: My car was running...

oh and btw - when you get a change, pull of the door panel and see if the previous owner had door lock actuators installed. Maybe he/she had it, and when they removed the alarm...or bad wiring...etc...the decided to leave them in there...it would explain the auto locking.

Door hanger method works. To help make that method easier, grab a wooden door stopper (looks like a wedge) and pound it between the windows with a rubber mallet (or hammer or shoe). This will give you an inch or two gap between the windows and allow you easy access with the coat hanger. This method works very well. Using this method, I once beat two police officers in a race to see who could open a gentlemens locked out car first. The police had an actual slim jim kit. Suffice to say they weren't pleased when the crowd started cheering over their defeat.

Hey guys thanks for all your replies I was able to steal 6 verts today. I'm actually a car thief. I keeed I keeed. lol. I was able to get in myself using a coat hanger after only 5 minutes of trying. Hmm, not a good sign because that's the first time I've ever broken into any car succesfully in my life. Wirelessalpha; brilliant suggestion regarding the door locking on it's own. I did notice a car alarm horn under the hood. Door actuators would certainly explain it I guess. I'll take a look right away. Thanks to everyone who responded. For a few minutes there i thought I was screwed. I think I'll go have some spare keys made today.

Yeah the coat hanger is definately the best lo tec trick for such an experience. Also you might wanna check next time to make sure you don't have free roadside assistance. For example I have a sam's club busniess membership it has free roadsisde assistance (4 free assists including gas spare tire and pop-a-lock) some cellphone companies also include it.
