Help PLEASE! Shifting problems and popping noises while going in reverse!

I've got a `93 240SX SE (automatic transmission) that is shifting hard between first and second gear. I've searched the board for an answer to no avail. I've recently had the transmission flushed, and have of course checked the transmission fluid. It only has the problem between first and second gear.

Also, when I back up while turning the wheel to the right (i.e. backing up out of a parking space to the right) I will usually get a popping sound from underneath the car.

I'm actually stumped here too, I get the exact same popping noise when in reverse turning the wheel right. My guess is it's a suspension piece that only gets hit when moving backward with the the geometry pointing all the way right.
