Hello all,

I just got a SEL for this horrible noise. 2006 G35 Coupe MT.

At the auto store I got code P0011 for camshaft position. Unlike what I've read from others having P0011, it sounds like my issue is mechanical. All parts stock AFAIK. It started quiet a week or two ago and got really bad the last couple days. Please watch to hear noise at around 2k to 2.5k rpm:

Should I take to dealer? Japanese auto mechanic? Other mechanic? Will this severely hurt my engine continuing to drive with this?

Check the alternator and water pump for noises or bad bearings.

The person filming thought the noise came from under the engine cover.

The intake valve timing control solenoid valve uses oil flow to control timing. Low oil level OR dirty oil can cause the valve to stick open or closed.

Replace the valve, but FIRST, check oil level - then, change engine oil and filter, reset code.

Thanks. I checked oil and it was low (didn't expect that since I had oil change a couple months ago). 2 quarts brought oil back to midway on dipstick and the heinous noise is gone. Phew.

However I unhooked the battery a good 10-20 seconds and the SEL remains on. Should I still replace the "intake valve timing control solenoid valve" or the sensor? Did it get messed up?

Possibly.

CEL may remain on if the valve malfunctioned. Not a bad idea to replace it anyway, they don't last forever.

If you're not checking your oil every week, start doing so. You were nearly 3 quarts low - that's over HALF of your capacity. You're either leaking, burning, or your mechanic is a moron.

If the issue is resolved, the code/CEL will clear itself in the next 3-6 drive cycles...
-OR- use an OBD scanner (phone app & cheap ELM 327 from amazon) to clear the check engine light.

CEL hasn't cleared and I drive every day. I got an OBD reader to clear the code, but it won't connect to my ECU >:(

I did oil/filter change and have good oil level. Then I changed out the left side camshaft valve solenoid valve, where the noise was coming from. Unhooked battery, etc. Engine light still on. No change, if I push the car hard it still makes the horrible sound.

Any wisdom appreciated.
