i have a 1989 240sx and i get a noise when i am under load...it sounds like detination and happens when i am at my exact timing mark...i could figure that its the timing...but i know the pain behind the job...so would like others input.. now i can retard it 3-5 degrees and noise gone...put it back to spec..and its back... ive checked everything...egr....injectors...ignition components...you name it ive checked it...but i would like to know if anyone else may have had this problem...before i throw the 12hr job on my back... now i am a mechanic...so please people...dont hold back!

My 1991 will rattle at stock timing when running anything but premium. I realize I am a DE while you are an E, but I chalk both up to "engine variances". Nissan does run the timing on these cars right up against the limit, and if you and I run a little poorly, I think all we can do is buy better gas or back off the timing. Long term, we can look for other problems (knock sensor? Temp sensor? Thermostat?) and a more permanent solution, but as long as you get good mileage and make good power, there is no harm running a few degrees off stock. Just remember to re-time before a smog-check.
