Damn it all!!

I'm replacing my front crank seal (see other post) and I just came across some big trouble (maybe). At the end of the crankshaft, there is a semi-circular pice of metal that sits in such a fashion as to allow the crank pulley to not freely spin once it's been pressed on. I assume that it's a precaution of some sort.

Anyway, the crank pulley itself has a hair-line fracture running from the groove that is cut into it!! I figure that it weighs about five pounds and spins at 6000 rpms............ Is the crack going to become a fissure that inevitably turns the crank pulley into a five pound rotating mass of motor bay destruction?

Should I replace it now with the ASP crank or is everything going to be fine and I'm just paranoid???

I need to know right away because I'm either done in an hour putting the car back together, or out four days for order time! Lastly, how do I reinstall the crank pulley itself? Pound it on with a rubber mallet or insert the 27mm bolt and tighten it until it sits flush?

Thank you very much in advance!!!

By the way.......I'm talking about a VERY thin hair-line fracture here. The only reason I noticed it was because I was cleaning the crank pulley with degreaser and a rag.

A crack in any part is not good, only do to get worse. If your leg was only slightly fractured would you get it fixed or just let it go? Thats what I thought ........LOL!!! FIX IT FIX IT FIX IT

is this the oem crank pulley? if so replace it. you can upgrade and get an asp lightened pulley for $90.

I think that I panicked a little too much. Did you know that the pulley comes apart into two seperate pieces? It is held together with six 10mm bolts spaced equidistantly around the center. Only the inner portion has the fracture and it DOESN'T run all the way through upon closer inspection.

My thinking here is that even if one piece fractured all the way through significantly, the bolts would hold everything together enough for me to realize that there was a problem. As it stands now after driving with it for three days, I think that everything will be fine for a while.

Will I replace the pulley with the ASP unit? Yes. Will I sacrifice my cell phone payment and food money to do it this month? No.

Thank you all very much for your input! I'll keep you updated on the situation if you're interested. Personally, I'm curious to see how the pulley looks next month when I get around to replacing it.
