I finally got my 93 J-30. I read all the posts that I could before my purchase so I knew what I was getting into. I is pearl, tan interior and about 99k. I took your advice. I changed the oil to synthetic. I dropped the transmission pan, cleaned, put in new filter and synthetic fluid. All is well so far with all that.Ya'll warned me about the electronics on these. But even with that warning I have been very surprized and I need some help.I have had it about 2 months. I have experienced the following problems. They are like weird gremlins!!

1. turn signals just stopped.....replaced fuse...ok now.2. left headlight provides a light show. At night..it goes on and off at will!!! I have checked fuses under dash, rechecked units on left side of engine compartment, took out all bulbs checked connection and replaced. NO CHANGE. What can I do. This is irritating at best.....a hazzard at worst.3. One day it was raining hard. The passenger side window just went down.......all by itself. Well I pushed the "up" button, and it went down again, .....rain coming in and all..... I pushed up...it went up...then it went down...this continued for a laughable amount of times.....I just couldn't believe it!!!! I finally got it to stay up. But guess what....It won't come down. What do I do now???4. The airconditioning unit also has a mind of its own. It will be working great. Gosh most of the time. Then out of the blue it will stop blowing cold air......it just blows abient temp air....which in Nashville, Tn can be pretty warm.. What is with this??? what can I do.

I love the look, the ride, and everything else about the car, but this is more trouble than I expected.

Please provide some suggestions to get these things fixed.

I thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Eric "Ric" Avery aka skyrocket

Your headlamp gremlin is most likely the headlight relay going (gone) bad. More than one poster has reported similar headlamp problems such as yours (including myself - 1993 J30t), and all found the solutiion replacing the headlamp relay.

It's a do-it-yourself job. The relay is a black plastic box about 1/2 the size of a pack of cigarettes located in the back driver's side of the engine compartment, attached at the inside of the quarterpanel up near the hood support base. Easiest way to access it for removal is to remove the power steering pump temporarily via its 3 (or maybe 4, I forget) bolts that stick out in the front driver's side wheel well above and behind the front tire.

Once the steering pump is out of the way, there's plenty of room to get at the relay connection.

Relay is about $40 or so.

When you say the window went down by itself, do you mean the motor actually turned on or it slipped? If the motor activated, I'd suspect you have water entering the door cavity or getting to a wire with faulty insulation that's providing ground to the circuit... that's a long shot, but the best I can come up with right now...

I'm not sure if the J uses a variable displacement compressor like the Q, but the Q's have a swash plate that will sometimes stick in "low" causing what you describe. The other option is that you're low on freon or have moisture in the system causing ice crystals to form blocking the flow of freon in the system. Does turning the system to "off" or "econ" for a few minutes - then turning it back on bring back the cold air?

Thanks to both of you!

1. Where do I get a relay other than the dealership?

2. Yes the window went down automatically. It did not fall. I will check out the insulation. and the grounding issue.

3. I will also check the freon level. thanks for the suggestions.

Missing just a half pound of freon(my GF hates when I say freon insted of refrigerant) is enough to make your a/c work some of the time. You can try http://www.infinitipartsusa.com for the relays. They probably don't have them online, but call and I'm sure they can supply them to you.Let us know how it goes and post some pics!:D

Again many thanks. I am off to the dealership to get the relay part and install. I will let you know how it goes.

I will also check the air "refrigerant" and take apart my door.

What a day!

Lights are fixed folks....thanks to your advice. What a pain to put that little bugger in. I finally found the bolts in the wheel well after much guessing.

Still didn't get the window fixed. Bought the part. Took the panel and all kinds of things off. I lost my nerve when actually getting to the part of making the switch. Taking it to a mechanic. I am afraid of dropping the window and shattering glass.

Oh well. Live and learn.

I'll let you know how it goes.
