So after looking for days for more info on this, i cant seem to find a clear answer for my specific situation

im keeping the stock coil and ballast resistor.

my transistor unit (ignition control module) went out and decided to repalce with a GM 4 pin hei. my ballast resistor is 3 pin insetad of 2 on a 240z. all the write ups refer to a msd or petronix coil and does away with the resistor ballast but no provision ive come across to keep the ballast on a 260z. heres the stock setup.

and heres where i am right now in the diagram.

Why keep the ballast? Coils are cheap, you can run full voltage through yoour stock unit it just shortens the life of the coil. I don't think you can run an HEI with a ballasted coil. I also think the distributor polarity can be an issue, and be sure to maont that HEI to a heatsink, it gets HOT!

I seen your thread on ratsun Re037 and was just wondering did you get the tach working? and also could you go a little more into specifics on the wiring? i have a 260z also and think my ignition module went bad.

yep, got the tach working. just left the stock ballast resistor in place since i kept stock coil. just follow the writeups online or the rough diagram i posted and UNPLUG/REMOVE the stock ignition transister unit beneath the dash by the pass side footwell. ppl say the wires comign off the distributor are usually red/grn but mine was grn/grn. on the harness its grn/black so i went wiht blakc as ground. Also, add a ground wire to the gm hei mounting hole. i noticed an improved throttle response and bigger torque curve.
