Just got a used G37x sedan. Looks like 80%+ pad left on front, ~ 40% pad left on back. On a hard stop when I get the brakes hot I'm getting vibration indicating most likely the front rotors need resurfacing but I can tell from the lip on the rotors that the rotors are original (car has 40K miles on it - was a corporate car with lots of freeway miles) and the pads are probably replacements.

I don't want to dump unnecessary money into this car but the vibration is bugging me. Was thinking of starting with a set of new front rotors. Although on my Brembos on my Volvo, the dealer was alway emphatic about replacing pads when replacing rotors since the pads are already 'grooved' to the worn rotors. Seems like overkill and a way to get more service dollars as the new rotors should wear any irregularities in the pads down or at least reduce them.

Wondering what people recommend. Again I'm not tracking this car just driving it old man style and don't want to spend more than necessary.

Should I go with just aftermarket solid rotors, or should I also really get the pads too and if so which ones? I've read cross drilled is better than solid in dry braking, but are they worth it and will the dealer have issues with any warranty claims on the brakes if they see drilled rotors? I try to stay away from slotted as you can't really resurface slotted without defeating the purpose of the slots somewhat?

Educate me oh G Gurus! :)

For Daily driving you won't have any issues with a blank face rotor and decent pads. If you were going to any track events or autocross, then a slotted or drilled rotor wouldn't hurt, but not for a daily. Stop Tech rotors and Hawk Ceramics would be my suggestion. Less dust than the oem and better performance.

Considering I have 80% pad left, are new pads really needed or is it that I may just need to resurface the new rotors later when I replace the pads?

New pads are not necessary. Are they producing alot of dust? Does that annoy you if they are, I know most folks can't stand it. I'm just amazed the rotors are warped and there is a lip but the pads still have 80% left. They must have not been resurfaced the last time the pads were replaced.

It was a corporate car probably used by several idiots that didn't notice the increasing vibration. It isn't noticeable unless you hit them hard from like 50 to 10 MPH so they heat up. The rotors look exactly the same as my Volvo rotors when they tech pointed out the lip and said there wasn't enough material left for a resurface.

Brakes in these cars have good bite but I haven't tested fade and don't need to since I didn't buy this car to go to the track onec in a while like my previous car with Brembos. The little wimpy rear rotors crack me up though but I read it is best to not change the size as it will screw up the brake balance unless you upgrade the fronts too.
