My steering wheel makes a dry grinding noise when I turn it. Sounds similar to a dry bearing. I assume there is a bearing in the column somewhere. Could this be the problem, and can it be replaced with ease?

Umm, it's a 1992 Nissan 240SX? I guess I'm not sure what you think I'm leaving out.

Straight stock car, no mods anywhere. Column tilts. No airbag, my car is a 1992, airbags weren't common in cars until a year or two later.

The grinding noise occurs whenever you turn the wheel through the duration of the rotation, meaning it doesn't just intermittently make noise. Sounds like dry metal scraping, and is very audible.

pull off the coloum covers behind the steering wheel and see if it still does it.The cover has 4 to 6 screws holding them on from the bottom side. you do have a bushing at the top of the coloum but they dont typically go bad. once you have those covers off you can pretty much see the bulk of the coloum. have you been able to isloate the noise to the top or the bottom of the coloum at all?
