Ok, I need help. My transmission is messed up. It is a 1993 automatic 240sx, the transmission was replaced a couple of years ago with a 1991 transmission. The problem is that every now and then, it will hang up in first gear, and will not shift out, most of the time. Sometimes I can rev it up to about 5000-6500 rpm's, let off the gas, and it will shift into second, but usually I have to put the car in nuetral, turn off the car, turn it back on, and then it will shift. This is a pain in the but to do every morning and afternoon, not to mention the people behind me getting very angry at me turning off my car in the middle of the road. But, now it is doing the same thing when trying to shift into overdrive. This just started about 4 days ago. It will just rev at high rpm's at about 60-65 mph. I have taken the car to a transmission specialist, to the Nissan dealership, and a few local mechanics. They all said, "since it shifts after you turn the car off, it has to be electrical." This makes sense, but everything they have tried has not worked. They have hooked up the diagnostic thingy and it came up with nothing, I replaced the 93 transmission control unit with a 91 t.c.u. and that didn't help either. I have an extra transmission out of a 95 240 sittin here, but I don't want to put it in without knowing that it isn't electrical, but that seems like it is my last choice. Any suggestions or tips or anything that I can try please tell me. I want to fix the transmission and sell this car and buy a manual 240. Thanks for your time,

-Joey.

i does sound electrical but i would check fluid level first. is the fluid on the dipstick with engine running in park?also, do you have a multimeter?

yeah, the fluid is fine, but, multimeter? Is that the thing that measures ohms and volts?

Man this seems to be a very common problem with automatic our transmissions! I have the same problem and have been trying to figure it out for about a year.

Check the 240sx convert. fourm, there is a large post about this problem. Someone came up with the idea of the valve body for the transmission. He said that when a trans shop rebuilds a transmission they don't rebuild or replace the valve body. I guess it controls the shifts. The reason I bring it up is that it is the only thing I haven't tried.

P.S. my dealer couldn't figure it out either.
