Hey everyone, i have a 95 s14 and it recently started making a noise when i release the clutch pedal, but only when i am in gear. It's making a clunking sound that sounds like its coming from behind me. When the car is not in gear pressing the clutch up and down and no noise...it's a sr20det off of a s15 with 6 speed transmission if this helps...a friend of mines is telling me it's the differential making noise but just wanted to check with the pros first. Thanks in advance!!

I Don't Think It Matters.

Open Diffs Don't Go For A Lot.

$50 Tops.

I doubt that its the diff, might be the transmission output shaft case bearing(or what ever they call it now). Cause it would only make noise when in gear. Making sense clutch released/engaged, turning input shaft, gear (selected) meshed, going to output shaft/tail shaft. From your description, I would say this is transmission bearing related, but not definite to only trans.

There is a way/steps to get a good idea of what could be the problem. But it's been couple of years since I dealt with trans diagnosis when I went to tech school.

As for Diff, get 95 or 96+ Infinity J30, its a VLSD meaning Viscous Limited Slip Differential, much better than stock S14 open diff. They are direct bolt in for your car, which will allow you to use stock axles. Older J30 VLSD are 5 bolt flanges/axles, opposed to 240sx 6 bolt. Make sure you get correct because there are ABS versions. With sensor in the front of diff reading of off pinion, some S14' are ABS and some are NONE ABS. Z32 N/A diff will work too.

Q45 and Z32 TT are a bolt in too, but require much more parts to make it work. Don't think this would be ideal for you.
