im new to this forum stuff. i just got a spec v early dec. the problem wit my spec v is it kept makin a funny grindin sound. i thought it was the timing chain so i took it 2 a shop and he said it was the tensioner. so i went back about a week later 2 get it tighter and the car started makin a knockin sound and guy at the shop said it could be inside my engine any suggestions on what 2 look 4.

Does the sound go away when you push the clutch in? If so you could be looking at 2 new bearings. I am on my secon transmission from nissan.

Check the problem areas thread and make sure you've done everything. I think the knocking may be a separate issue from the previous one. You may have sucked in some catalytic converter material or a butterfly screw.

Did the dealer actually look at the car? I think if they diagnose it with any problem related to the recalls, you'll easily be able to raise enough Hell (contacting corporate, for instance) to get them to give you a new engine/transmission/whatever.

he didnt even take a look at it. he was just givin me alot of crap sayin that that the butterfly screw recall is only for the 04s and that my car vin isnt between the recalled ones. since i just bought the car in dec. i took it back there and let them figure it out. im hopin they are gonna be fast on gettin it figured out and fixed. but who knows how that is gonna go. when i first bought the car it had no cat. and the took a week and a half just 2 fix that. by the way its a 02 spec wit about 67000 miles.

It may not be butterfly screws though, it could be precat failure. In fact, I'd rank precat failure over butterflies in this case. Furthermore, I've heard plenty of stories of dealers taking care of butterfly issues on 02-03s.

By "no cat" do you mean the precat (in exhaust mani) or the actual cat? Just to clarify...

And you have the stock header, right?

I still call precat failure if that's the case, and if so, Nissan owes you an engine.

so i went back 2 the dealer 2day after along week of them inspectin the car and tryin to find the problem. the guy told me that the engine was blown. he didnt give me much info. but the mechanic wasnt there to give me a better understandin. i always thought if the engine was blown the car wouldnt move but what do i know, i never seen one get blown. but 2 end it on a good note they are replacin the engine wit no questions. yay! i should have my baby back in a week or so. ill post pics.

Engines can blow but still have enough compression left to make the car move.

You just cashed in on the precat recall. Get a header on the new engine ASAP if you want to be 100% sure of avoiding blowing another one.

Hotshot is generally considered the best, but it's not cheap.

I think OBX makes a cheap Hotshot copy that also happens to be stainless steal. Yay for not rusting.
